Dear Keepers of the Missions,
The Catholic Church is eager to establish another mission, the 22nd, after we finish the mission in Sonoma. The new mission could be anywhere in the northern part of Alta California. Please tell us exactly where you think the mission should be located and what it should look like, based on your knowledge of the area. As the last of the missions to be built, we expect that you will make improvements upon the mission system when you design your mission. We welcome your suggestions on how to improve life for the natives we seek to help. When you present your ideas, explain how the mission will help meet the Church's goals in California. With gratitude, Archbishop of the Catholic Church Mexico 1819 |
Title: Location of ________Mission
BEFORE you begin your proposal:
Look at the map on page 120. Consider the routes Portola and Anza had sailed.
Ask yourself:
Where did Father Serra build his first mission? Why do you think he had built it there?
What would be an easier route for the missionaries to arrive at your mission? By overland or by sea?
Which landform region would be ideal for your mission? Near the coastal, desert, central valley, or mountain region? Why?
Read pgs. 126-127 in your textbook. Look at the 21 missions that have been already built from 1769-1823 on the map on p. 127.
1. Name a mission near San Francisco Bay_____________________
2. Name a mission near Monterey Bay________________________
3. Name a mission near San Diego Bay________________________

Q: Why were missions built near Indian villages?

Where should your 22nd mission be built?
FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS BELOW TO DECIDE ON THE LOCATION OF YOUR MISSION.
- Open a new tab.
- Go to Google Maps.
- Type in: San Francisco Solano Mission, Sonoma, CA.
- Look north along HWY 12 for good places for a mission within 30 miles of Sonoma. Try looking around Santa Rosa. The Sonoma County Airport is 30 miles north of Sonoma and is the northern limit of your search.
- Use the Google Earth icon in the lower left corner to see a photograph of your planned mission site.
- Remember that your site must be near water and good farming land.
Sample Paragraph #1 of your proposal
Ex. Landmark: Sonoma Valley Regional Park
Ex. At the intersection of Sunrise and Dairy Rd
- The Santa Clara Mission will be located within 30 miles from Mission San Francisco Solano in Sonoma, California. It will be next to the Annadel State Park, west of Bennett Valley Road. It will have a river on the east side of the mission surrounded by flat plains. Fertile land will be available within a half-mile walk. We can plant and grow crops on this land, as well as a water source nearby. Fish can be caught from the river to bring food for the missionaries. Wood is available from the trees at the State Park so the missionaries can make fire from the wood and build fences for their cattle and sheep.
- Detail #1: Where is your mission located? Be exact. Use landmarks or intersections (where two roads cross each other) to let everyone know the specific location.
Ex. Landmark: Sonoma Valley Regional Park
Ex. At the intersection of Sunrise and Dairy Rd
- Detail #2: Why is this a good place for a mission? What geographic features and resources will you need.
- Name the water source. Ex. lakes, rivers, etc.
- When you are done, check with the Archbishop (your teacher) for approval.
Presidios
Paragraph #2
Read pages 128 - 129 in your textbook.
What were presidios? What does a presidio look like?
Why did the Spanish build presidios?
Why do you need to build a presidio near your mission?
Make sure you answer these questions in your paragraph.
Teacher model:
Presidios were forts built by the Indian workers near the missions to protect the Spanish settlements. Not only were the early structures of the presidios uncomfortable with dirt floors, but they also had open windows and little furniture. The Spanish felt that missions alone were not enough to hold their claim to California. I will need to build a presidio to protect my mission and strengthen Spain's claim to Alta California.
Look online for presidio images. Add two pictures with captions below your title and above your writing.
PRESIDIO DESIGNS
Design your rough draft of the presidio on graph paper using the illustration and key on pages 128 - 129 as a model. Do not copy.
Consider these when building your presidio:
Read pages 128 - 129 in your textbook.

Consider these when building your presidio:
- What kind of walls and roofs will you be using?
- Look at the key of "A Closer Look" page 128. You should include the items on the Key. Ex. #2 Officers' quarters, #6 Chapel, etc.
- Be historically accurate. (do not include rooms that may not exist in the old days.)
- What will your surroundings be like? Will you have a farmland, river, bridge, forest, etc. ?
California Indian Ways Changed Forever

Teacher Model
The missions changed the Indians' ways of life. First of all, the Spanish priests taught the Native Americans about Christianity and their European (from the continent of Europe) ways of living. The Indians became neophytes, new believers of the Catholic faith. Secondly, the economy of California changed from hunting and gathering to farming. Not only were the Indian men and women forced to pray and work for the missions, but the Indian children had to attend church and school. Some Indians were unhappy that they had to leave behind their customs. They revolted by burning the missions or escaping, but sadly, many were forced to return. Ultimately, the mission system changed the traditional ways of life for the Indians.
Add one picture between your title and your paragraph.
HOW TO ADD A QUOTE FROM THE TEXT:
- Read pages 140 -141. Review your paragraph. You will add one of these quotes in your paragraph.
- From which perspective would you like to share the quote? The priest's or the Indian's? Why?
- Where do you think is the best place to use the quote?
- Don't forget to use quotation marks for your quote.
- Include the person's name at the end of your quote.
Purpose
Purpose of the Mission
Write one paragraph detailing why and how your mission will improve upon the first 21 missions. Mission system improvement ideas should show a clear understanding of the negative effects of the mission system on California Indians. Improvement in the lives of native peoples in the mission system must be consistent with the goals of the mission system and be well thought-out.

Designing Your 22nd Mission
Add a slideshow of the exterior (outside) and interior (inside) of some California missions. (This will give you ideas of how to design your Minecraft Mission.)
Look at the picture and key on pg. 137. What are the essential rooms and features of a mission? Use this as a guide to build your mission on Minecraft. Do not copy. The more creative you are, the higher your grade will be.
