CALIFORNIA: FROM MEXICAN TO AMERICAN CONTROL
Use the paragraph organizer to write ONE summary paragraph based on all the readings below.
Read pages 206-207: Americans in California
Teacher Sample: The population of the United States changed from 5 million in 1800 to more than 23 million in the 1840s. Because of the Manifest Destiny, many settlers decided to move to California for more opportunities to work and live. The idea was that United States should expand from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean. Many Californians started to demand for California to be a part of the United States. President Polk offered $40 million to Mexico, but Mexico did not want to sell California. Sadly, Mexican's control weakened as the mission properties have been given away as land grands and the government didn't have money to pay the soldiers in California. A group of settlers called Osos tried to take control of California to have California as a republic of their own.

What were the causes of the California Gold Rush of 1849?
Teacher Sample Paragraph:
On January 24, 1848, the discovery of gold by James Marshall in Coloma, California was life-changing for many Californians. It happened when Marshall and some workers were building the sawmill for John Sutter and while digging, he found a small nugget that looked like gold! He quickly reported to Sutter. In a letter about the gold discovery, John Sutter stated,
"When he returned to the city, he held up a bottle filled with gold dust..."
Sutter referred to the excitement in Marshall's voice when the gold was presented in his office. This triggered "gold fever" and news of the discovery spread all over the country. Soon 90,000 forty-niners, named after the year 1849, rushed to California to participate in the gold rush.

Entrepreneurs (a person who sets up a new business) showed ingenuity and the willingness to take risks in order to make money.

Chapter 10: California Becomes a State
Read pages 246-252 in the textbook.
The Essential Question:
How did California become a state?
Due to the Gold Rush, many newcomers who came to California demanded the same rights as they had in the United states. They were not used to the military rule where the Californians did not have any rights. Thus, a convention was held by General Bennet Riley, the military governor of California, to have 48 delegates vote on the boundaries of the land and to declare California as a free state. The state public school system and a constitution was created to give new rights and freedom to the citizens.
Unfortunately, there were three problems that occurred. One of them was that southern states in the United States did not want California to join as a free state.
Why not? Describe the Compromise of 1850. (Write as many sentences as you need to to describe it.)
